Landscaping in Falkirk, starting at the front door

If you are looking for landscape gardeners in the Falkirk area, the front of the house is often where to start. Front paths and driveways take a battering from cars, bins and the weather. When slabs start to rock, sink or hold water, it is the first thing people see when they come to your door.

Across the district you will find older terraces in Camelon and Bo’ness and family homes in Larbert, Stenhousemuir and Polmont. The jobs tend to be similar: a path that has dropped, a driveway with weeds pushing through, a fence that has blown down and walls that need attention.

A recent job: path and driveway relaid in Falkirk

Our clearest example is a front path and driveway in Falkirk. The slabs on the path and driveway were lifted and relaid. The old gravel beside them was cleared out, a weed membrane went down over the ground and the area was finished with fresh chips.

It is a good example of fixing what is there rather than starting from scratch. You can see each stage in photos on the Falkirk path and driveway project page.

When slabs rock or hold puddles, the problem is almost always the base. A sound base for a path is typically 100 to 150mm of compacted sub-base, with the slabs bedded on mortar and laid to a slight fall so rain runs off. Where slabs are cracked beyond saving, we replace them and match them as closely as possible. The same approach works for patios and garden paths.

Fence repairs after a Falkirk winter

Winter storms leave a trail of snapped posts, broken rails and blown-out panels across Larbert, Grangemouth and Falkirk itself. The fence does not always need to come down in full.

A repair usually means replacing a few posts, rails or panels rather than the whole run. On a new or rebuilt fence, posts are set in concrete, typically around 600mm into the ground for a standard 1.8 metre fence, with gravel boards to keep the timber off the soil. Our fencing and fence repairs page covers the options.

Height rules are worth knowing. Scotland’s permitted development guidance on mygov.scot explains that a fence or wall can usually go up to 1 metre next to a road and 2 metres elsewhere without planning permission. Conservation areas and listed buildings follow different rules, and Falkirk Council’s planning and building standards pages are the place to check.

Pressure washing and a cleaner front

Paths, patios and driveways gather moss, algae and grime, especially on the shaded side of the house. Pressure washing lifts it off and makes surfaces less slippery in the wet months.

Cleaning often shows up other jobs. Gaps in patio joints can be re-pointed and loose slabs re-bedded while we are there. If you are getting a house ready to sell or rent, a cleaned driveway, a painted garden wall and fresh gravel make a clear difference from the street.

Repointing brickwork and garden walls

Garden walls and house walls around Falkirk take years of wind-driven rain. Over time the mortar crumbles, water gets into the joints and bricks start to spall.

Repointing means raking out the old mortar, usually to at least 15 to 20mm, and filling the joints with fresh mortar that suits the wall. On older buildings, lime mortar may be the right choice rather than cement, and we will advise when it is.

Gravel, borders and the finishing touches

Gravel areas thin out, mix with soil and fill with weeds. Topping them up rarely fixes that. Clearing back, laying a weed membrane and spreading fresh gravel gives a clean, low-maintenance finish, as the Falkirk job shows. The membrane is what makes the difference: it lets rain drain through while keeping soil and weeds below the stones. Edging along the lawn or path keeps the gravel where it belongs.

Questions

Working in Falkirk

Do you cover the whole Falkirk area?

Yes. We work across the Falkirk Council area, including Falkirk town, Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Grangemouth, Polmont, Bo'ness, Denny, Bonnybridge, Camelon and Laurieston. We are based in Alloa. If your village is not listed, call the office and we will let you know whether we can help.

My driveway slabs have sunk. Do I need new ones?

Not always. If the slabs themselves are sound, they can be lifted, the base underneath put right, and the same slabs relaid level. That is what we did on a path and driveway in Falkirk. It keeps good slabs in use and avoids paying for new paving you do not need.

Can you repair just part of a fence?

Yes. After a storm it is often only a few posts, rails or panels that have gone. If the rest of the fence is sound, we replace the damaged sections and match them as closely as we can. If the whole run is rotten at the base, we will tell you replacement is the better option.

Do I need planning permission for a new fence in Falkirk?

Often not. Under Scotland's permitted development rules, a fence or wall can usually be up to 1 metre next to a road and up to 2 metres elsewhere without permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas are different, so check with Falkirk Council if your home is in one.
