Planning a garden that works for you

A garden makeover starts with a few plain questions. How do you use the garden now? What would you like to use it for? How much time do you want to spend looking after it?

It helps to think about the garden through the year, not just on a sunny day:

  • Sun and shade. Where does the evening sun fall, and where would a seating area get the most use?
  • Routes. Where do you need a dry path to the bins, the shed or the washing line?
  • Wear. Which areas get churned up by children or dogs?
  • Wet spots. Where does water sit after rain?

Small practical details like these often make more difference to how much you enjoy the garden than any single feature.

Doing it in stages

Not every garden has to be done in one go. A garden makeover in Alloa or Stirling can be split into stages to spread the cost and the disruption.

The order matters. Groundwork comes first: clearing, levelling and any garden drainage, because it is far harder to fix a wet lawn once the new turf is down. Hard landscaping such as patios and paths usually follows, then fencing, then lawns, planting and finishes. We set out each part separately in your quote so you can decide what to do now and what can wait.

Rockeries, new and reworked

A rockery is a good use for a sloping bank, a sunny corner or an area where grass will not grow. Built well, it looks natural, drains freely and needs very little looking after.

Good practice for a rockery:

  • Bury the stones by around a third of their depth, tilted slightly back into the slope, so they look as though they belong there.
  • Mix grit into the soil, often 5 to 10mm horticultural grit, so water drains away quickly.
  • Top dress with grit around each plant so the crowns do not sit wet over winter.
  • Plant in spring or early autumn, when the soil is workable and not waterlogged.

Most alpines cope with cold but not with wet roots, which is why drainage matters so much here. The RHS alpine growing guide is a useful reference if you want to choose plants yourself.

Old rockeries often end up buried under weeds and grass. We can clear them out, reset loose stones, refresh the soil with grit and replant. The stone in an old rockery is usually worth keeping.

Low-maintenance planting and borders

Many people want a garden that looks good without taking up every weekend. Tough, low-growing shrubs, ground cover and rockery pockets need far less attention than bedding plants or large areas of lawn.

Bark mulch works best laid around 50 to 75mm deep, so it smothers weed seedlings and holds moisture in the soil. It breaks down slowly and usually needs topping up every year or two. Gravel lasts longer but is harder to clear of fallen leaves.

Borders finished with a weed membrane and gravel or bark cut down on weeding and watering. We will give you plain advice on what suits your soil, the aspect and Central Scotland weather.

What a makeover usually combines

Most makeovers bring several of our services together, so one firm plans the order of work and nothing falls between trades:

  • A patio or path for seating and dry routes, built on a proper base. See patios and paths.
  • New or repaired fencing for privacy and a tidy boundary. See fencing.
  • A lawn, either new turf or artificial grass for shady, wet or busy gardens.
  • Borders and rockeries finished with gravel, bark and low-maintenance planting.
  • Clearing and waste removal, so you are left with a tidy garden at the end.

Questions

Garden makeovers & rockeries: common questions

How much does a landscape gardener cost per day?

Most garden landscaping is quoted per job rather than per day, so you know the full cost up front. The price depends on the size of the garden, access, materials, how much needs clearing and how many services are combined. Send us a few details and photos and we will give you a free written quote.

Can we do the garden makeover in stages?

Yes. Many people start with the groundwork, such as drainage, paths or a patio, and add lawns, fencing and planting later. We plan the stages so the first one does not get in the way of the next, and each part is set out separately in your quote.

What are the best rockery plants for Scotland?

Low, tough plants that like sharp drainage do best, such as sedums, saxifrages, thymes, dwarf heathers and small hardy alpines. Most cope with cold but not with sitting wet, so a gritty soil mix and a grit mulch around each plant matter more in Scotland than choosing rare varieties.

How long does a garden makeover take?

It depends on the size of the garden and how many jobs are combined. A simple refresh might take a few days, while a full rebuild with a patio, fencing and a new lawn takes longer. We give you a realistic timescale with your quote and plan the order of work around the weather.

Do you design the garden or do I need a designer?

For most gardens you do not need a separate designer. We talk through how you use the space, what you like and what you want to change, then suggest a practical layout and put it into a clear quote. If you already have a plan or a designer's drawings, we can work from those.
