The job
This front garden in Falkirk had a slabbed path to the door, a slabbed driveway alongside it and an area of gravel across the rest of the front. The brief was to lift and relay the slabs on the path and driveway and to renew all of the old gravel.
Rather than rip everything out, the existing slabs were lifted and relaid. Reusing sound slabs keeps the cost down and keeps the look of the house consistent, while relaying them properly gives an even surface to walk and park on.
The gravel
Old gravel tends to thin out, mix with soil and fill with weeds over the years, and topping it up rarely fixes that. Here the old gravel was cleared back, a weed membrane went down over the ground, and fresh decorative chips were spread and raked level across the front.
The membrane is what makes the difference. It lets rain drain through but stops most weeds coming up from below, so the new chips stay clean for much longer.
